Islah Ud Din

Hockey is not just a game in Pakistan it is a passion. Being the national game of the country, hockey is taken very seriously in Pakistan. Though the crowd may prefer to watch and play cricket, there are enough ardent fans and world class hockey players in Pakistan.

One such ardent Pakistani hockey player is Islah Uddin. This player has changed the fate of many matches. This former Olympian has a silver and bronze Olympic medal to his credit.

The main period in his career was between the years 1975 and 1978. He won four gold medals in the top tournaments. The tournaments where he won his gold are Bangkok Asian games, Buneous Aires world cup, Lahore champions’ trophy and Lahore Quaid-e-Azam international tournament in the year 1978. He also won a silver medal in the year 1975 in the Kuala Lumpur world cup. He was also awarded the most prestigious Pride of Performance in the year 1982.

A short way to describe his career would be forward player, capped 93 times and played between the years 1967 and 1978. Was an extremely fit player who served his country by playing hockey for more than ten years.

Pakistan hockey has been real down under in the last few years. They have been hiring foreign coaches to teach them new techniques and to bring them back to their normal winning streak. With the failure of all the foreign coaches, the PHF or Pakistan Hockey Federation has decided and appointed Islah Uddin as the first paid manager cum chief coach. This enormous duty has been placed on his broad shoulders till the year 2008. The team’s poor form has been a worry for the country and the PHF.

The appointment of Islah Uddin is a main step towards changing the age old ways of Pakistan hockey. This term has been given to Islah Uddin to make the current Pakistan team a winner at the Beijing Olympics.

Till date none of the home team management has ever been paid. Islah Uddin is the first ever Pakistan manager and chief coach who shall receive a handsome salary for coaching the young Pakistan team boys and leading them to a victory.

This is a huge task for Islah Uddin. Seeing the current form of the Pakistan team, he would have to work on each and every player and improve their game as a team on the whole. If he is successful and can show some positive results, like a few crucial wins, his term as the manager-chief coach will be extended.
