Victory of Pakistan Hockey Team in Champions Trophy 1994 Lahore

The idea of the Champions Trophy in Hockey was conceived by Pakistan. The idea was put before the FIH, which gave its approval for the tournament. The inaugural edition of the tournament was hosted and won by Pakistan in 1978. Pakistan also went on to win the Champions Trophy two more times. Pakistan successfully defended the Champions Trophy in 1980 and went on to win the 1994 edition as well.

Lahore was the venue for the 1994 Champions Trophy. All the matches were played at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore. The tournament was held between the 17th and 25th of March. For the third time in the history of this event, the tournament ended with play-offs. Six teams would play each other in a series of round-robin matches and the top two teams will play each other in the final. The bronze medal match would be contested by the third and fourth placed teams. The teams which contested the 1994 Champions Trophy were host nation Pakistan, defending champion Australia, Spain, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Pakistan topped the table with nine points, closely followed by Germany with eight. Australia was in third place with 6 points. The Netherlands had four points and was in fourth place while Spain was fifth with 2 points. Great Britain was in sixth place with one point. Spain and Great Britain played each other in a play-off to avoid relegation.

Pakistan went into the finals against Germany having won four of its five round-robin matches.   The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out after the scores were tied at 2-2. Pakistan won the final 5-4. This was Pakistan’s third victory in the Champions Trophy tournament. The Netherlands won the bronze medal match against Australia, while Spain avoided relegation by defeating Great Britain. Though Spain failed to make an impact in this tournament, its player Javier Arnau was the top goal scorer of the tournament with nine goals.

Interestingly enough, the scores of both the final and the bronze medal match were tied at 2-2. The outcome of both the matches had to be decided by penalty shoot outs. This victory was a shot in the arm for Pakistan Hockey, which seemed to be on the wane for a period of time.

Pakistan Hockey went through a golden vein of form from 1971 to 1984. During this period, the team won three World Cups, two Champions Trophies, 2 Asian Games gold medals and 2 Olympic gold medals. After 1984, there seemed to be a lull in proceedings. Though Pakistan was still one of the powerhouses of world Hockey, its form and fortunes seemed to be on the decline for a few years. The team’s victory in the 1994 Champions Trophy came at the right time for the country. It was the morale-booster that Pakistan needed. With young and talented players like Sohail Abbas coming through, things once again started to look up for Pakistan Hockey.
